Who is Eligible for Gastric Banding?

Weight loss surgery is only recommended for people who are morbidly obese or super obese.

To be eligible for gastric banding you need to meet the bariatric surgery guidelines as set out by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Bariatric surgery, including gastric banding is recommended by NICE as a treatment for adults with obesity only if all of the criteria below are fulfilled:

  • If you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40 and you have tried and failed with other weight loss treatments. BMI stands for Body Mass Index.

It’s a mathematical calculation - Your Body weight (in kilograms) divided by your height (in metres) squared, that’s used to determine whether you are overweight. BMI may be a less accurate measure of adiposity (fatness) in adults who are highly muscular, so should be interpreted  with caution in this group.
  • If your BMI is between 35 and 40 and you are suffering from other medical conditions such as high blood pressure or type-2 diabetes.
  • That all appropriate non-surgical measures have been tried but have failed to achieve or maintain adequate, clinically beneficial weight loss for at least 6 months
  • That you are receiving or will receive intensive management in a specialist obesity service
  • That you are generally fit for anaesthesia and surgery
  • That you are committed to the long-term lifestyle, dietary and nutritional changes and also on-going support and follow-up.

Gastric banding or other forms of bariatric surgery are also recommended as a first-line option (instead of lifestyle interventions or drug treatment) for adults with a BMI of more than 50 kg/m2, super obese, in whom surgical intervention is considered appropriate.
