Testimonials: Scott's Story

I've been heavy most of my adult life, however until about 25 years old I was actually quite slim. As I grew older and got into stable relationships, food seemed to become a comfortable friend, something that I could always rely on to soothe and sustain. As some of those relationships soured, it also became an incredible crutch. I grew to hate the way I looked, my girth, my "hugeness". Unfortunately, the only medication that seemed to help was to continue to eat obsessively and without regard to either my health or happiness.

About 5 years ago I decided to try to do something about my weight. At the time I didn't even know about the Gastric Band - the only option seemed to be a Gastric Bypass. I petitioned my insurance and tried to get this procedure covered - I was denied each step of the way carrying it all the way to a final appeal. Since my policy clearly forbids any weight loss related surgery "regardless of the medical necessity" I was unable financially to afford bypass.

Then I discovered the Gastric Band and realized that unanswered prayers are often times gifts. Not only could I afford the Gastric Band, it was a much superior alternative to the bypass in all aspects. Lower complication rate, much lower death rate, less invasive, total reversable... the list goes on and on.

I completed my surgery on March 24, 2004. I began losing weight almost immediately and it was completely manageable and required little effort. Sure, I exercise - but I'd done that on every other weight loss system I'd ever tried. Once I received my fills I was suddenly liberated - I no longer fantasized about food and was able to control myself and my hunger. I no longer take medication for type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol - all previous conditions due to obesity.

I've lost over 145 pounds with the help of my band. Most importantly, I am able to keep the weight off and maintain a healthy weight. I can't tell you what that means - I can fit a plane seat; go up and down stairs; walk, run, jump, exercise; go for hike, ride a bike, swim, play - all of it! I am so grateful to have discovered the band - it's given me back my life.
