Weight Loss Surgery

Weight Loss Surgery, as part of a carefully planned and applied range of diet and lifestyle improvements, can be an extremely effective method of sustainable weight reduction and control.

As with all forms of surgery, the decision to have weight loss surgery shouldn’t be taken lightly. Only those with severe obesity, who haven’t responded successfully to other forms of treatment, should consider it as a serious option.

Gastric BandingThere are essentially two types of weight loss surgery, (also known as bariatric surgery), available through Gastric Band Service and the AOS team.

  1. Restrictive – commonly referred to as gastric banding
  2. Malabsorptive - also known as gastric bypass surgery

The preferred primary weight loss surgery among many professionals is gastric banding. There are various medical and lifestyle reasons why gastric banding has proven so popular and successful and deemed the safest weightloss surgical procedure.

With proper, personalised pre-operative support, and long-term follow-up care the procedure can be extremely effective, often resulting in a quick weight loss of at least 60% of excess weight. Gastric banding supports long-term weight stability and sustainable weight loss management through smaller portions, healthier choices and changed eating behaviours. Gastric banding is less invasive than other forms of bariatric surgery and presents less medical risks as it is totally reversible and involves no cutting or stapling of the stomach or bowel. Hospitalisation and recovery times are shorter than those involving gastric bypass surgery and if necessary it can even be reversed.

Alternatively irreversible gastric bypass surgery, which cuts, staples and removes part of the digestive system can offer dramatic, rapid weigh loss but is commonly considered a more risky procedure. The related morbidity and mortality is too high for some to consider this as their first choice.

Please contact Gastric Band Service/AOS for confidential support and advice, or to find out if weight loss surgery is right for you.
