Welcome. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to visit the Gastric Band Service (GBS) website.
Recognising you have a weight problem and seeking help is an extremely brave and important first step on your weight loss journey. We recognise your possible embarrassment and anxiety and we respect your courage for seeking help to gain control.
GBS founder Sharon Bates has herself walked a similar path, feeling 'too fat to help' and that there was 'no way out' she had weight loss surgery in 2000. If you seek weight loss surgery, including gastric bypass, follow up care, band adjustments & support please contact us
When we see others succeed we aren’t usually privy to the associated failures or personal costs that accompanied that success.
Thomas Edison, when trying to create the light bulb, was asked, “How can you keep going after failing 10,000 times? Isn’t that ridiculous? Why don’t you just give up?”
Edison answered, “You don’t understand, I haven’t failed 10,000 times, I’ve simply succeeded in finding 10,000 ways that definitely won’t work.”
Have you succeeded in finding ways that definitely won't work? Now move towards finding the way that WILL work for you.
The UK based Gastric Band Service team understand the complexities involved for change to take place. We recognise that lifestyle, behavioural change and personal costs are all elements that may contribute to you remaining the same and help you learn to take control.
Until now these may have included: desperate dieting, fasting, over-exercising, using slimming pills, crazy / disordered eating habits, binging and other behaviours that have impacted on your current weight.
Successful and sustained weight loss is achieved using a holistic approach that addresses many aspects of your food and eating related behaviours. Weight loss surgery, counselling, life coaching, and nutritional support may all play an important role that will contribute to the positive personal changes you seek.
Sharon Bates is a Specialist Bariatric Nurse and a master practitioner in eating disorders. She is a core member of the Avon Obesity Service [AOS] team. Sharon is a professionally qualified humanistic Counsellor and is expert in the management of obesity using personal experience of gastric banding and surgical weight loss procedures (operations) to help others
Obviously, the first step is to confirm that you are eligible for weight loss surgery / gastric banding, that it is an appropriate form of treatment for you and that it is what you want.
Our team has a clear understanding of the emotional impact of significant change. During a weight loss journey people express many emotions that include fear, relationship concern, grief, loss, happiness and joy. At any stage of weight loss surgery you may chose to seek counselling as a support for you through significant change.
Gastric banding is a safe and effective form of weight loss surgery. It means accepting long term change but it is worth it!
You are not alone. We are with you every step of the way.
UK based GBS offers follow-up care that includes gastric band adjustments / fills, X-rays and medical input - even for those who have received gastric banding surgery or weight loss surgery elsewhere in the UK or overseas.
We are all different - we all have our own stories to tell and our own futures to make. If you have struggled with 'being fat' or obesity and feel that other weight loss methods e.g. slimming pills or yo yo dieting have been ineffective, then gastric banding or weight loss surgery could be the right treatment for you.
